Beverly, Morgan Park, Mount Greenwood and Washington Heights News

February 17, 2026

Hi!

I’m Jim, your new neighborhood reporter for Block Club covering Beverly, Morgan Park, Mount Greenwood and Washington Heights.

While I started at Block Club two months ago, I am no stranger to the area I cover. I grew up in Morgan Park and still call the neighborhood home today. I also worked for two years as editor at the Beverly Review, a local weekly newspaper in Beverly.

I’m 25, a diehard Blackhawks, Bears and Cubs fan, and I’m an avid moviegoer. I saw “Solo Mio” this past weekend. Kevin James put together a pretty good performance, but I really enjoyed seeing the locations they filmed across Italy.

When I am not working, you can often find me out and about in the neighborhood. I am a big Milano’s Pizza fan and it’s hard to beat a nice donut and coffee from Beverly Bakery. I would love to hear from you about your favorite spots in the area.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, you can expect to see a newsletter from me in your inbox with everything I’ve covered across the neighborhood in the past few days.

Today’s top story follows John Carmody, aka Beverly’s very own Knife Guy. Carmody has been walking the neighborhood the past three years with his green and red knife-sharpening cart he bought from Tony Del Ciello.

Growing up in the neighborhood, it was always a summer tradition to hear the knife-sharpening cart and run outside to watch the knife guy work on our block. Carmody said it takes him about 90 seconds to sharpen a knife. He is currently working out of his garage in Beverly.

In my opinion, the best thing about this newsletter is the “reply” button. This is a two-way street. Feel free to reply and reach out with any story ideas or tips — or to talk about upcoming movie releases.

Thanks for reading,

Jim Lynch
